Mackerel: champion of benefits!
Omega-3, vitamin D, selenium, iodine, magnesium... A treasure of eating well, mackerel offers a concentrate of nutritional benefits ideal for getting back moving and taking care of your health!
Mackerel: Omega-3 champion
With 12% lipids, mackerel is one of the fattest fish alongside salmon and sardines. But be careful, oily fish does not mean bad for cholesterol, health, and the figure, far from it!
Mackerel is a valuable source of “good fats”, those known as “omega-3”, also known as “essential fatty acids” or “polyunsaturated fats” - “poly” because there are several, in this case two: DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).
These omega-3s are good for the functioning of the heart, brain, liver and regulate the essential functions of our body. They are essential to our metabolism but our body cannot produce them alone; we must necessarily obtain them through food!
Our body requires a nutritional intake of 250 milligrams of each of these two omega-3s per day on average. And 100g of mackerel provides 6 times the recommended daily intake of DHA, and 3 times that of EPA. A valuable source therefore, especially since the average French intake of these two omega-3s is insufficient by half according to ANSES (the National Food Safety Agency).
Mackerel: champion of Vitamin D
Still according to ANSES, 70% of the French population is deficient in Vitamin D, particularly in winter due to the lack of sunlight. In fact, exposing your face, hands and forearms to ultraviolet sunlight every day for around ten minutes allows our body to synthesize the necessary quantity of vitamin D.
But apart from exposure to the sun, certain foods can satisfy this need, notably fatty fish. And mackerel is particularly rich in vitamin D since 100g of mackerel covers 100% of the daily intake (or VNR) necessary for our body.
Vitamin D, essential to our body, plays a versatile role since by absorbing calcium and phosphorus, it actively contributes to the good health of our bones and our teeth, but also of our muscles via cellular tissues, of our nervous system via its beneficial effect on nerve transmissions, and our entire immune system.
Furthermore, mackerel is a recognized source of vitamin B3 (41% of VNR) and vitamin B12 (300% of VNR, i.e. 3 times the recommended daily intake), which helps combat fatigue on all levels by stimulating our energy metabolism, our psychological and physiological functions, and our nervous system.
Mackerel: champion of minerals
Mackerel is an excellent source of iodine (43% of VNR), selenium (56% of VNR), phosphorus (30% of VNR) and magnesium (8% of VNR), marine minerals of prime importance for our body:
- Iodine, involved in the synthesis of thyroid hormones, is particularly essential for the proper brain development of the fetus. And this from the first months of pregnancy. Pregnant women have an increased need for iodine and therefore have every interest in consuming mackerel, especially since it is a non-predatory fish with no risk of heavy metal concentration.
- Selenium is a valuable antioxidant that fights against premature aging of cells by activating our body's antioxidant defenses.
- Phosphorus strengthens our skeleton, our teeth and our cell membranes, while participating in energy metabolism, a vital trace element for seniors.
- Magnesium is essential for the proper functioning of the body and the nervous system. It contributes to the maintenance of good bone, dental, muscular and nervous health.
